The History of Bright-Grandview Golf Course
Bright-Grandview Golf Course began in 1902 as a nine-hole city course designed by Warren Dickinson. By the spring of 1911, the course had been expanded and redesigned into an 18-hole layout. At the time, course designers could not have predicted the rapid growth of Des Moines’ east side or the significance of nearby Hubbell Avenue, which became a vital route for travelers entering and exiting the city.
The 1911 design required golfers to drive their balls across Hubbell Avenue to reach the 11th and 12th holes. As the use of automobiles increased, Hubbell Avenue transformed into one of Des Moines’ busiest streets and became part of an early transcontinental highway. The hazards of crossing the road and the risk of errant golf balls striking vehicles or pedestrians led golfers to petition the city for changes.
Finally, in October 1933, the park board approved the purchase of the additional 18 acres located immediately east of the course. The city council secured the land through a 15-year lease at $1,000 per year, allowing for the necessary expansion and redesign.
